August 22nd: Berry picking.

Monday, August 22, 2005: It has been two weeks since Leela's latest (and probably last) cycle of chemo. On Friday Leela went to the clinic for a blood test. She is severely immune suppressed. When she is in such a state, we try to keep her away from situations that might result in an infection. However, in general the effects of this cycle have been very mild.

While we are uncomfortable traveling too far a field, we are trying to go on a day trip once a week. Last week we drove to Northern Neck, Virginia for some berry picking. While a little hot, it was a very nice day. We arrived at the farm at a little after noon. We had a picnic lunch before tackling the black berry vines. We ended up picking about 4 pounds of berries, but some of them ended up in our tummies before they had a chance to be weighed. Then we made a stop at Colonial Beach, a sleepy resort town along the banks of the Potomac. Maya and Leela got a little playtime in the sand. On our way home we stopped at a traditional Maryland crab house. Maya and Leela liked the crab, but they couldn't do any of the cracking and picking for themselves. Despite having to leave before being able to enjoy a second tray of all-you-can-eat crabs, everyone enjoyed the dinner. This week we hope to get to another Chesapeake Bay destination.
